Family Counselling

Family Counselling also known as Family Therapy is another form of psychological counselling or Psychotherapy that helps family members work together to improve communication and find ways to solve conflicts.

It may include all family members or just those able or willing to participate in the sessions. The help for specific treatment plan will very much depend on family's situation. The therapy sessions can teach you skills to help deepen family connections and get through stressful times, even after the therapy sessions are over. Family therapy sessions are often short term with 4-6 weekly sessions but it would also be subject to situations in the family

Family counselling and therapy sessions will help improve troubled relationships with partner, children or other family members. Specific issues such as marital or financial problems, conflict between parents and children, or the impact of substance abuse or a mental illness on the entire family can be addressed in these sessions.

Family Counselling and Therapy may also continue with other types of mental health treatment, especially if one of the family members has a mental illness or addiction that also requires additional therapy or rehabilitation treatment.

Example: If a member of the family or relative has a serious mental issue such as schizophrenia, this member should continue with his or her individualized treatment plan, which may include medications, one-on-one therapy or other treatment plans. The family may participate in family therapy even if the person for example with an addiction hasn't sought out his or her own treatment.

Family Counselling and Therapy can be useful in any family situation that causes stress, grief, anger or conflict. It can help family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring every one closer together.
